Safe Workplace Program – What is it?
Employers in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories who demonstrate a commitment to making workplace health and safety a core company value will be recognized by the WSCC through the Safe Workplace program.
To be considered a Safe Workplace through the program, employers must meet the following criteria:
- Have an active Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program in place.
- For the Safe Workplace designation:
Have all the elements of an OHS Program (indicated on the OHS Questionnaire). OR - For the Advanced Safe Workplace designation:
Have an OHS program that is certified by an accredited third party, such as Certificate of Recognition (COR) and International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 45001.
The accreditation must be based on NT or NU legislation. Contact theNorthern Safety Association(NSA) for more information.
- For the Safe Workplace designation:
- Be in good standing, or up-to-date on reporting payroll and in paying WSCC assessments.
- Time loss claim volume is below your class average (looking back over five years).
- No Outstanding Directions/Orders resulting from a WSCC regulatory inspection.
- No convictions under the Safety Acts and OHS Regulations, Mine Health and Safety Acts and Regulations, or Explosives Acts and Regulations.
- Have no workplace fatalities in the past 12 months.
